Mallinckrodt is a medical specialty company which produces contrast media imaging agents, MRI imaging agents, radiopharmaceuticals, bulk chemicals, and pharmaceuticals in both bulk and unit dose form. We also operate a chain of radiopharmacies in the United States and Great Britain that dispense unit dose radiopharmaceuticals to local hospitals and clinics. Mallinckrodt is a part of the Tyco Heathcare network.
Advanced Clerkship Goals:
- APPLICATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD TO ASSIGNED PROJECTS:
- The student will be challenged with researching and formulating solutions to issues that affect the operations of our entire chain of nuclear pharmacies.
- APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE OF PREPARATION, DISTRIBUTION AND CLINICAL ASPECTS OF RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS:
- Students will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the State and Federal regulations that govern the practice of nuclear pharmacy.
- Students will serve as an instructor to nuclear technology students on the use, preparation and clinical aspects of radiopharmaceuticals.
- Students will experience the daily operations of an in-house PET center and the clinical applications of the products produced.
- APPLICATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS AS IT APPLIES TO PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH
Advanced Clerkship Objectives:
- Student will be assigned a project that is involved with one or more of the following: product preparation, quality assurance, development of education tools for sales representatives and pharmacists, regulatory issues related to the dispensing and usage of radiopharmaceuticals, or product marketing.
- The student will be involved in teaching nuclear technology classes on the use, preparation and clinical aspects of current radiopharmaceuticals.
- The student will be involved in the expansion of radiopharmaceutical care services available from a centralized radiopharmacy.
- The student will be expected to do independent research. They will be allowed full access to the Mallinckrodt Medical Library and its Medical Research staff.
- The student will be expected to interact with the Research and Development division of Mallinckrodt, Inc. in finding solutions to assigned projects. The student will be expected to apply scientific methodology to assigned projects. The student will use Research & Development resources to validate and fine tune projects.
- The student will be expected to present results of projects in the proper scientific format: (hypothesis, purpose, procedure, data, conclusion). The student will be able to present and explain data and apply both scientific and statistical tools in justification of their conclusions.
- The student will be expected to provide the conclusion for their project in a format that is of poster presentation quality.
- The student will work with the pharmacy regulatory unit and gain experience in the application and enforcement of the laws and regulations that affect the practice of nuclear pharmacy.
- The student will be participating in the regulatory audit process of a radiopharmacy and be expected to offer solutions to regulatory deficiencies and unique regulatory issues that may arise during their rotation.
- The student will be expected to participate in implementing solutions to identified regulatory deficiencies.
- The student will be expected to participate in the evaluation, development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures for the radiopharmacy network. Management will identify these items on an as-needed basis.
