Radiopharmacy, Inc is an independent nuclear pharmacy located in Evansville, Indiana and is an excellent example of how "clincial" pharmacy services can be provided by a centralized nuclear pharmacist.  This rotation emphasizes the provision of pharmaceutical care by focusing on the nuclear pharmacist as the primary source of information regarding the radiopharmaceuticals that are dispensed.  By completing this rotation in the nuclear pharmacy setting, the student will have the opportunity to see how clinically oriented practice can be attained while providing unit dose radiopharmaceuticals to a number of local hospitals.  The student will also have the opportunity to gain additional practice in the compounding and dispensing of radiopharmaceuticals.  The student must also be registered for NUPH 595, Clinical Clerkship in Nuclear Medicine at the IU Medical Center to be eligible for this rotation.

Advanced Clerkship Objectives:

• Be familiar with references and information resources pertaining to nuclear medicine and nuclear pharmacy practice.
• Demonstrate ability to utilize information resources (both written and electronic) to research questions and requests (both clinical and non-clinical) from nuclear medicine practitioners.
• Effectively convey requested information and supply appropriate recommendations.
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of regulations unique to nuclear pharmacy practice and the use and handling of radioactive materials.
• Document drug information and pharmaceutical care activities, and measure the impact of dispensed information and recommendations on the care of patients.
• Be able to compare and contrast centralized unit dose radiopharmacy service with the operation of a nuclear medicine department based hot lab.  Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each, and be able to perform an accurate financial comparison for an individual nuclear medicine department.
• Actively participate in the receipt of orders, preparation of prescriptions, compounding of radiopharmaceuticals, performance of quality control and quality assurance tests of compounded radiopharmaceuticals and the compounding environment, and the packaging and delivery of nuclear pharmacy products.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the risks associated with administered radiopharmaceuticals and radiation exposure.
